Università Iuav di Venezia
Iuav University of Venice
Founded in 1926 as the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia, starting in 2001 it became the Universitā IUAV di Venezia and to the historic Architecture department, added the Regional Planning Department and the Department of Design and the Arts. One of the most prestigious schools of architecture in the world, it has counted among its teachers, in over seventy-five years of activity, some of the major protagonists of Italian and European architectural culture: Ignazio Gardella and Giuseppe Samonā, Carlo Scarpa and Franco Albini, Bruno Zevi and Manfredo Tafuri, Giovanni Astengo and Carlo Aymonimo, Aldo Rossi and Vittorio Gregotti, Francesco Dal Co and Massimo Cacciari, to name just a few.
Faculty of Arts and Design
The Faculty of Arts and Design, founded in November 2001, is distinguished by the innovative approach of its teaching structure. Its venues in Venice and Treviso house three different three-year degree programs (Industrial Design, Visual and Performing Arts, and Fashion Design), four graduate degree programs, (Industrial product design, Visual and multimedia communication, Design and production of the visual arts, Theater science and technique) and a first-level masters course in medical design. Directed by Marco De Michelis, its organization is based on two specific teaching approaches: experimental studios, in which projects are developed under the guidance of world-renowned designers, graphic designers, artists, directors and set designers, and the theoretical critical courses, held by some of the most distinguished representatives of the disciplines relative to the theory and history of industrial design, communication and artistic production, as well as science and technology, particularly in the computer field.
Teachers include, among others, Giovanni Anceschi, Francesco Bonami, Michael Burke, Giorgio Camuffo, Aldo Cibic, Gillian Crampton Smith, Daniele Del Giudice, Michele De Lucchi, Paolo Fabbri, Bruce Fifield, Mona Hatoun, Joseph Kosuth, Walter Le Moli, Tomās Maldonado, Alberto Meda, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jorge Orta, Pierluigi Pizzi, Luca Ronconi, Tobia Scarpa, Angela Vettese.
The studios and theoretical courses are completed by a wide range of cultural activities and intensive workshops that also involve major designers from all over the world. The Ph.D program in product and communication design, instituted in 2003, also presents study programs in the field of design theory, the relationship between design and technological innovation, the new frontiers of multi-modal communication, as well as history and museology.
